OxSonics was established in July 2013 to develop a new generation of ultrasound-based medical devices for drug delivery applications. OxSonics will initially apply its platform technology to address a major unmet clinical need: metastatic liver cancer.

OxSonics “SonoTran” platform has the proven capability to overcome the greatest challenge facing solid tumour cancer therapy by safely delivering drugs throughout tumours, including to those areas that lie farthest from blood vessels. SonoTran can be used to enhance delivery of any cancer drug. A major benefit of OxSonics’ technology is that it provides on-screen feedback to the clinician as to where drug delivery is taking place in real time. OxSonics is based in Oxford, UK.

Position Summary

The position of Senior Ultrasound Engineer is responsible for contributing to the ultrasound system design and development, software development support, and in-vitro and in-vivo optimization and validation for OxSonics Limited. The Senior Ultrasound Engineer shall be a member of the Engineering Team and will report directly to Engineering Director. As a senior team member, the Senior Ultrasound Engineer will also be expected to work more independently as well as lead some efforts that include technical direction of other team members and consultants.

Listed below are the major responsibilities of the role and a brief description of some of the key tasks to be performed. This list is not totally inclusive and the person will be expected to be flexible toward working in a hands-on, small-team environment to develop the system.

Major Responsibilities

Under direction from the Engineering Director, the Senior Ultrasound Engineer will be responsible for:

1. Ultrasound System Design and Development:

  • Design and develop subsystems of the SonoTran ultrasound hardware platform as directed.
  • Contribute to the system and safety testing and validation of the SonoTran platform for both acoustic and electrical safety in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to the regulatory documentation efforts for the design history file and technical file.

2. Software Development Support

  • Contribute to the ultrasound system software development process providing technical support and ultrasound expertise to scan sequence design
  • Help to ensure that developed software performs effectively and safely on SonoTran ultrasound hardware platform through scan sequence development
  • Help to formulate software test cases and test plans to support software validation and acoustic testing.

3. in-vitro and in-vivo optimization and validation

  • Working with the Development Team, support pre-clinical ultrasound drug delivery testing internally through system support, feature development, and validation of methods
  • Working with the Development Team, contribute to the acoustic testing and validation of the SonoTran sono-sensitive particle manufacture Quality Assurance (“QA”) process and test equipment including a functional cavitation test apparatus.
  • Analyse the data from, and document and report on the results of all testing.

4. Additional duties

  • Organize technical projects and provide technical leadership to project team members where appropriate and contribute to project planning and reporting activities
  • Liaise with external consultants and partners for development and testing services
  • This role involves hands on testing in an ultrasound lab using electronics equipment to support rapid product development and testing.

Skills & Experience

The Senior Ultrasound Engineer will have a proven ability to:

  • Develop, test, and validate ultrasound devices.
    • Extensive ultrasound or acoustics experience (essential).
    • Experience with ultrasonic measurements and calibration (essential).
    • Experience in a medical device regulatory environment (desirable).
    • Experience in in-vivo testing or pre-clinical device validation (desirable)
    • 5 years of experience with high level programming language – Matlab, Python, etc (essential).
  • Write detailed reports, SOPs, safety and risk documentation for test and experimental processes (essential).
  • Write software in one or more common object-oriented languages, e.g. C, C++, C#, Java, (essential)
    • 1 year of object oriented programming experience (essential)
      Experience programming, validating, and documenting software (desirable).
    • Experience in creating software modules to accredited standards (desirable).
    • GPU programming / CUDA experience (desirable).
  • Work independently on technical projects and provide technical leadership to small teams of engineers (essential)
  • Take a flexible approach on a day-to-day basis and perform tasks outside of one’s job description (essential).
  • Be able to operate as a self-starter in a rapidly changing and dynamic environment (essential).
  • Operate in a small company environment (essential).

The Ultrasound Engineer will have:

  • An MSc degree in biomedical engineering or equivalent (essential); PhD (desirable).
  • Home Office personal licence modules 1 – 3 (desirable but not essential).
